Treatment of periodontal disease - Scaling and root planing - Tartar ©

Scaling and root planing are different forms of treatment for periodontitis periodontitis (or pyorrhea or gum disease).

In this 3D animation from Clínica Médico Dental Pardiñas (http://j.mp/cPardinas) we talk about the diagnosis and treatment of periodontitis (pyorrhea) by performing scaling and root planing.

It shows how plaque and tartar will accumulate around the teeth and how it is removed using different instruments, thus returning the gum to a healthy state.
Here we can see the process of probing, one of the elements used to diagnose periodontal disease. The greater the measure, the greater is the existing periodontal pocket.
The progressive accumulation of plaque and tartar causes that the resorption of the bone that supports the teeth. Gums will show signs of inflammation and bleeding, among others. Once the accumulated plaque mineralizes, it becomes tartar, which can no longer be removed with regular brushing.
To remove tartar, curettes and ultrasound devices that are introduced below the gum are used. Polishing tools can also be used to polish the tooth surface. The gingiva in the absence of plaque and tartar will no longer be inflamed and will return to a healthy state.
This can originate retractions.
In a side view we can see the same process of scaling and root planing and the posterior healing of the gums.

Post Surgery instructions by an oral surgeon [after Tooth Extractions, bone grafting, implants]
After an extraction, it is important to follow post surgery instructions, for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. This is why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after extraction. If bleeding or oozing continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another thirty minutes. You may have to do this several times.Other important facotrs in post surgery instructions is not to smoke or use a straw.

After the blood clot forms it is important to protect it especially for the next 24 hours.

So Don’t:

• Smoke
• Suck through a straw
• Rinse your mouth vigorously
• Clean the teeth next to the extraction site

These activities will dislodge the clot and slow down healing. Limit yourself to calm activities for the first 24 hours, this keeps your blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding, and helps the healing process.

After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and have some swelling. You can use an ice bag to keep this to a minimum. The swelling usually starts to go down after 48 hours as is mentioned in the Post Surgery instructions.

As mentioned in post operative instructions after tooth extraction,Use pain medication only as directed, call the office if it doesn’t seem to be working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone. Drink lots of fluid and eat only soft nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. Don’t use alcoholic beverages and avoid hot and spicy foods. You can begin eating normally the next day or as soon as it is comfortable.

Gently rinse your mouth with salt water three times a day beginning the day after the extraction (a tsp of salt in a cup of warm water, rinse-swish-spit). Also, rinse gently after meals, it helps keep food out of the extraction site. It is very important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours; this should include brushing your teeth and tongue and flossing at least once a day. This speeds healing and helps keep your breath and mouth fresh.

It was wonderful; she was crying when we got here but the staff calmed her down. Dr. Park came in and reassured her that everything was going to be smooth and that she was going to wake up feeling great and happy – she would either be crying or be silly, and everything went as smooth as we could have expected.

Do I need to quit smoking after tooth extraction? | Prevent Dry Socket - Dr. Rizwana Tarannum

Yes , you need to. When the tooth is removed there will be a blood clot which is formed in the extraction site and when you do the smoking the blood clot will be displaced an will lead to infection and the cigarette smoking contains a lot of chemical like the hydrogen peroxide, carbon monoxide and ammonia. This leads to delayed healing and inflammation, infection and dry socket. Dry socket is a condition which causes disintegration of the blood clot from the extraction site of the tooth. The cigarette smoke will expel the blood clot for the extraction site and can leaf to delayed healing and indirectly it will result in severe pain and bad breath and it is very important you should not do the smoking after the removal of the tooth for a better healing so avoid smoking atleast for 5 to 7 days.

Removal of an Infected/Broken Tooth | Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center

Infected or broken teeth often cannot be repaired and must be removed. If there is enough bone in the jaw, a dental implant can be used to replace the removed tooth. Dr. Benjamin Yagoubian is an oral surgeon at Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center who can perform removal of an infected/broken tooth at our facility in Torrance, CA.

In this short video, Dr. Benjamin Yagoubian discusses one of his patients who required removal of an infected/broken tooth. Dr. Yagoubian explains that the patient had a badly infected and broken tooth that needed to be removed. You will see short clips of the actual patient during the removal of an infected/broken tooth. The tooth socket was cleaned, and a graft was placed to help increase the bone. Months later, the patient returned to Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center to have the titanium post for their dental implant inserted to replace the missing tooth. Dr. Yagoubian performed the implant procedure, which will allow a prosthetic tooth to be attached to the implant to restore normal function for the tooth.

If you require removal of an infected/broken tooth, Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center can perform both the extraction and dental implant procedure. Call our facility in Torrance, CA to schedule an appointment.
