What could be worse than a root canal? A lot of things! The root canal is probably one of the most misunderstood dental procedures performed today, and is thought to be incredibly painful with lasting side effects. Not true! A root canal is an endodontic procedure used to repair and save an abscessed or decayed tooth. During this interactive root canal, you will isolate the tooth and clean the tooth's root canal with a special file. After irrigating the area to clean it thoroughly, you will fill the cavity with a rubber compound known as gutta-percha and seal it off. A craniectomy decreases intracranial pressure (ICP), intracranial hypertension (ICHT), or heavy bleeding (also called hemorrhaging) inside your skull. If left untreated, pressure or bleeding can compress your brain and push it down onto the brain stem. This can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage.

Brain surgery is a very serious procedure under any circumstances, but a craniectomy is done when there is an immediate risk to the brain and neurological function due to severe brain injury or stroke.

The apicoectomy is a procedure to remove an infection that affects the root of a tooth and the adjacent tissues. It is performed in cases where the endodontic treatment has failed, presence of canals or false canals unsealed or in teeth where the access to the apex is not possible by a conventional root canal treatment.

To do so, an incision is performed, and sufficient bone is removed to get access to the root apex. Then the infectious cyst is removed cleaning and irrigating the area. A beveled shape cut is made to the root removing the apex and sealing the root with different materials. The area is sutured and will regenerate until its complete healing.

A huge dental infection with an abscess is drained.

A tooth abscess is one of the most frequent oral problems. The abscess forms when pus from an infection collects in the area around the root within the dental bone. If the abscessed tooth is not treated, it can lead to a serious infection of the dental bone and surrounding tissues.

Treatments for a tooth abscess:

An abscess has different treatments depending on the severity of the infection. Here are some of the methods that a dentist may consider:

A) Prescribing antibiotics may be necessary. Antibiotics will destroy the bacteria that cause the infection.

B) The dentist may drain the pus from the infected area.

C) Once the area is cleaned, it is essential to detect and treat the cause of the tooth abscess:

If this has been caused by gum disease, it will be essential to clean the space between the tooth and the gum.
If the origin of the abscess is a caries or a fractured tooth, a root canal treatment (endodontics) or a filling may be performed. If the tooth cannot be saved, it may need to be extracted.

There are two possible complications after wisdom tooth surgery: dry socket and paresthesia.
Dr. Teresa Lozano, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with Baptist Health South Florida, explains paresthesia is numbness in the lower jaw. She advises following patients closely and monitoring them for recovery of the nerve.
The specialist affirms a week after having the procedure, a patient can notice numbness. It’s one of the risks of having wisdom teeth removal.
