Post Surgery instructions by an oral surgeon [after Tooth Extractions, bone grafting, implants]
After an extraction, it is important to follow post surgery instructions, for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. This is why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after extraction. If bleeding or oozing continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another thirty minutes. You may have to do this several times.Other important facotrs in post surgery instructions is not to smoke or use a straw.

After the blood clot forms it is important to protect it especially for the next 24 hours.

So Don’t:

• Smoke
• Suck through a straw
• Rinse your mouth vigorously
• Clean the teeth next to the extraction site

These activities will dislodge the clot and slow down healing. Limit yourself to calm activities for the first 24 hours, this keeps your blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding, and helps the healing process.

After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and have some swelling. You can use an ice bag to keep this to a minimum. The swelling usually starts to go down after 48 hours as is mentioned in the Post Surgery instructions.

As mentioned in post operative instructions after tooth extraction,Use pain medication only as directed, call the office if it doesn’t seem to be working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone. Drink lots of fluid and eat only soft nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. Don’t use alcoholic beverages and avoid hot and spicy foods. You can begin eating normally the next day or as soon as it is comfortable.

Gently rinse your mouth with salt water three times a day beginning the day after the extraction (a tsp of salt in a cup of warm water, rinse-swish-spit). Also, rinse gently after meals, it helps keep food out of the extraction site. It is very important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours; this should include brushing your teeth and tongue and flossing at least once a day. This speeds healing and helps keep your breath and mouth fresh.

Wisdom tooth is the last permanent tooth to erupt in to the oral cavity around 18 to 25 years of age. When there is no sufficient space for the tooth to erupt or due to lack of eruptive forces, these tooth fail to erupt. Some time the teeth gets fully buried and more often partially erupts in to the oral cavity.
The accumulation of plaque or microbiological agents in the space between the impacted teeth and gums gives rise to condition called "Pericoronitis" causing pain and infection. As age increases, the bone becomes thick in the region making surgical procedure tougher; the repeated pericoronitis cause functional malocclusion resulting in joint pain. Moreover the prolonged impacted teeth are susceptible to give rise to odontogenic cysts and tumors.
The procedure to remove the impacted wisdom teeth is a simple and safer procedure. A careful assessment of the teeth, bone and adjacent is made by studying the OPG or the jaw x-ray, a cone beam CT or a CT itself.
After assessment, the bone lying over the impacted tooth is carefully removed. Minimal removal of tooth is essential as preservation of bone will aid in faster healing. Hence sacrifice of tooth or splitting of tooth is preferred that bone.
As it can be observed, in this case, the crown or the upper portion of tooth is split and through this space, the roots are carefully removed. The socket cleaned of debris and the closed with sutures. Similar procedure is done on both sides. Depending upon the amount of bone to be removed post-operative swelling may occur. For milder cases, regular work may be resumed on the next day itself. Pain and swelling are usually controlled by regular pain killers and appropriate antibiotics prescriptions.

Wisdom teeth, or Third molars, are an additional set of teeth, which grow under the surface of the gums and, in many cases, are undetectable without proper x-ray evaluation or 3-D scanning. Infected or broken teeth often cannot be repaired and must be removed. If there is enough bone in the jaw, a dental implant can be used to replace the removed tooth. Dr. Benjamin Yagoubian is an oral surgeon at Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center who can perform removal of an infected/broken tooth at our facility in Torrance, CA.

In this short video, Dr. Benjamin Yagoubian discusses one of his patients who required removal of an infected/broken tooth. Dr. Yagoubian explains that the patient had a badly infected and broken tooth that needed to be removed. You will see short clips of the actual patient during the removal of an infected/broken tooth. The tooth socket was cleaned, and a graft was placed to help increase the bone. Months later, the patient returned to Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center to have the titanium post for their dental implant inserted to replace the missing tooth. Dr. Yagoubian performed the implant procedure, which will allow a prosthetic tooth to be attached to the implant to restore normal function for the tooth.

If you require removal of an infected/broken tooth, Torrance Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center can perform both the extraction and dental implant procedure. Call our facility in Torrance, CA to schedule an appointment.
