Corrective jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery, is a group of procedures performed to correct dentofacial irregularities, most commonly manifested as misalignments of the jaws. These deformities not only cause malocclusion or bad bite, but also create problems in the temporomandibular joint - the TMJ- and the airway, resulting in difficulties chewing, swallowing, speaking and breathing. While the surgery is performed to correct functional problems, patient's appearance may be dramatically improved as a result.
Open bite is a condition where the upper and lower front teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed or at rest. An open bite can lead to a number of oral health conditions including tooth wear, tooth breakage and TMJ disorders. It may also cause speech problems known as ‘lisping’ in some individuals. Open bite surgery involves removing some of the bone of the upper jaw to move it to a new position. Once the jaws are aligned, plates and screws are used to secure the bones in place.
Protruding lower jaw is corrected in a procedure called mandibular setback surgery. The tooth-bearing portion of the lower jaw is separated from its base and moved backward for proper alignment.
In a similar way, receding lower jaw, or “weak chin”, is corrected with mandibular ADVANCEMENT surgery. In this case, the tooth-bearing portion of the lower jaw is repositioned FORWARD.
Orthognathic surgeries are commonly performed in combination with orthodontic treatments and may take several years to complete.

How do we take an appointment?
Coming over for a personal consultation with our maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Sunil Richardson is the best option. We are located physically near the southernmost tip of India, a town named Nagercoil near Kanyakumari.
However, we have other options for patients from far and wide, who can’t travel for a direct physical consult.

This video shows a an apicoectomy surgical procedure step y step.
Apicoectomy is a dental procedure used to eliminate an infection in the root of a tooth and adjacent tissues. It is carried out in those cases in which a root canal treatment has not been effective.
The intervention is performed through the gum to access and cut the tip of the affected tooth, surgically removing the cyst and sealing the root with different materials. To finish, the area is sutured and over time the healing is completed

Yes, he can. A patient is classified as a diabetic if the fasting blood glucose is constantly above 140 mg/dl. A fasting blood glucose level of below 200 mg/dl is considered safe for most minor oral surgical procedures including extractions. However being diabetic makes you prone for lot of infections and has a poor effect on the healing capacity of the whole body. Hence it is mandatory to have an adequate amount of broad spectrum antibiotic coverage before and after your dental extraction. Also an optimum levels of blood glucose levels has to be maintained. So don’t skip your insulin or any other oral antihypoglycemic medications prescribed by your doctor. A preoperative blood glucose evaluation will be required by your dentist. Also if possible, a morning appointment schedule for your dentist would be ideal. Being diabetic doesn’t exclude you form any kind of dental treatment or you have to shy away from going to your dentist. You can always get your regular checkups doe, your scaling and restorations and fillings done without any hassle but for slightly complex and invasive procedures like the gingival flap surgeries or the implant procedures, there are few things you have to keep in mind and keep in check, the first is the random blood sugar, the RBS test will be required. The second one is HbA1C below 7 is what is ideal and the third and the key element is to be in constant touch with your dentist. Keep coming for follow up’s and schedule appointments and request the dentist for every moth appointments and they would gladly oblige and if anything goes wrong, we would be glad to help you out and monitor it.
What is a dry socket? Why does it happen ? How long does it last? Which is the treatment? Here we explainthe infection after tooth extraction:
00:00 Introduction:
This 3d video from Clínica Médico Dental Pardiñas (http://j.mp/cPardinas) shows the origin of dry socket, its treatment and its prevention.
00:08 Healing after tooth extraction:
After performing a dental extraction, the place on which the roots of the tooth are settled, called the alveolus, is exposed, forming a blood clot on it, thus generating the first stages of healing and protecting the nerve endings of the empty dental socket.
00:21 What does dry socket look like:
Occasionally, this clot may not form due to various factors, or it may disappear due to contamination by food debris or smoking during this healing phase. This produces a process called dry socket. When the nerve endings are exposed, intense pain is generated in the area, which usually appears during the first 3 days after a tooth extraction.
00:48 Dry socket treatment:
The main treatment is symptomatic with pain medication. It is also important to remove food debris by irrigating the area with saline solution. Curetting of the socket may be indicated to decontaminate the bone surface and cause bleeding for a new clot to form.
01:27 Treatment with Plasma Rich in Growth Factors:
Another effective treatment is the placement in the alveolus of plasma rich in growth factors, since it has bacteriostatic properties and favors tissue regeneration. It can also be used preventively, placing it at the time of extraction.

This medical animation shows how a craniectomy is performed to remove a part of your skull in order to relieve pressure in that area when your brain swells. This surgical procedure is usually done after a traumatic brain injury, but also to treat medical conditions that cause your brain to swell or bleed that can be caused by an aneurysm, brain tumor or other cancer.
A craniectomy decreases intracranial pressure (ICP), intracranial hypertension (ICHT), or heavy bleeding (also called hemorrhaging) inside your skull. If left untreated, pressure or bleeding can compress your brain and push it down onto the brain stem. This can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage.
Brain surgery is a very serious procedure under any circumstances, but a craniectomy is done when there is an immediate risk to the brain and neurological function due to severe brain injury or stroke.

This patient came to me with a large swelling and pain from her lower right first mandibular molar. We determined that the cause of the problem was that this tooth most likely had a vertical root fracture. This then led to the death of this tooth, and subsequent infection and pain.
In cases like these, the only treatment is for us to remove the tooth.
To extract the tooth, it is more simple to section the tooth into different pieces. That way, the tooth is less likely to break when we try and remove it.
In this video, I discuss what the problem was, our surgical plan, and then walk through how we did the procedure from start to finish.

Horizontally impacted wisdom tooth removal http://www.sdcdentist.com An oral and maxillofacial surgeon or your dentist can remove (extract) a wisdom tooth. The procedure often can be done in the dentist's or surgeon's office. You may have the surgery in the hospital, especially if you are having all your wisdom teeth pulled at one time or if you are at high risk for complications.
If you have any infections, surgery will usually be delayed until the infection has cleared up. Your doctor or dentist may have you take antibiotics to help heal the infection.
Before removing a wisdom tooth, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time. A general anesthetic prevents pain in the whole body and will cause you to sleep through the procedure. Your dentist will probably recommend that you don't eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery so that you are prepared for the anesthetic.
To remove the wisdom tooth, your dentist will open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. He or she will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth. Sometimes the dentist will cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.
After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. Your dentist will tell you whether your stitches need to be removed. A folded cotton gauze pad placed over the wound will help stop the bleeding.
