Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in your mouth, which usually happens when you are between 16 and 23 years of age. When there is insufficient gum space for normal eruption, these teeth become "impacted" -- that is, they remain below the gum line, or not quite clear of it, because they cannot fully emerge.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause infection of adjacent gum tissue, dental decay of adjacent teeth, crowding of front teeth or in rare cases, cysts.

It is well documented that removal of wisdom teeth in young adults (below the age of 25) is associated with less after-operation pain and swelling than in older adults. Therefore, if it is determined that your wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems, your dentist will usually recommend that you have them removed earlier rather than later.

Will I be awake or asleep during the procedure?
This will always be your choice, although recommendations will be made during your consultation appointment and your options will be assessed.

A woman from Penghu has become the first person in the world to have a tooth removed through her eye socket. A 23-year-old woman surnamed Hsu started to struggle with chewing six months ago. Doctors were astonished to find she had a tooth growing upward from her jaw towards her eye. To save their patient from eye damage, they removed a large number of teeth, but the upward-pointing tooth could only come out through the eye. The pioneering surgery was a major success.

She walks onstage with a card in her hand. This woman surnamed Hsu flew in from Penghu to thank her doctor for an unprecedented surgery that gave her back her capacity to speak, after a tooth began growing toward her eye.

Apart from the appearance, it was also affecting my eating, and it was affecting my ability to bite down. And when I spoke, saliva came out of my mouth, because it had pushed on my four front incisors and distorted them. That was so inconvenient in day-to-day life.

Hsu was unlucky enough to have a tooth grow in the wrong direction out of her jaw – upward. It was caused by a very rare bone disorder. Her teeth began to grow irregularly, but it was impossible to wear a brace. The tooth was growing beneath her left eyeball, and if it hadn’t been removed, could have grown unchecked into her eye, damaging her sight. After much consideration, doctors decided to remove the tooth through a surgical incision into her eye socket. The eight-hour surgery removed 16 teeth from upper and lower jaws.

The high-up tooth was already approaching her eye socket. Before long, it would have broken through into her eye and could have damaged her eyeball, affecting her eyesight. Luckily, this time we could remove the tooth through the eye socket.

This was the first tooth removal ever carried out through an eye socket. After her traumatic ordeal, Hsu is now on the mend, and can smile easily again.

Some wisdom teeth erupt without problems. But others can cause pain, swelling, and other issues due to impaction or insufficient jaw space.

Wisdom tooth extraction is a relatively simple surgical procedure that can reduce discomfort and lower your risk of oral health concerns.

Dr. Aiken is a native of Atlanta and attended The Lovett School. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in ecology, he earned his dental degree from the Medical College of Georgia, now Georgia Regents University, in Augusta. He then completed medical school, a general surgery internship, and his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Drew Shessel attended the University of Georgia for his undergraduate career and then continued on to the Medical School of South Carolina in Charleston, where he completed his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree. While there, he received a scholarship for excellence in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Before beginning his residency, he completed an OMS internship at LSU in New Orleans. Then, he moved to Florida to complete his training at the Broward Health Medical Center. While in Florida, he finished his required four-year OMS residency, during which he trained in the treatment of a wide range of oral and facial conditions. In addition, he learned the safe administration of all forms of anesthesia.

The Physics Forceps® are an atraumatic extraction system that provides a simple, predictable and unconventional method of extracting teeth regardless of a practitioner’s extraction experience, or the condition of the tooth, while providing a positive patient experience.

The Physics Forceps® operate as an elevator, rather than forceps, using first-class lever mechanics. One handle is connected to a "bumper," which acts as the fulcrum, that is placed deep in the vestibule. The other handle is connected to the "beak," which is positioned most often on the lingual or palatal root of the tooth into the gingival sulcus. No aspect of the instrument grasps the crown and there is no advanced elevation needed. Once the instrument is properly placed, the handles are rotated a few degrees with only wrist movement in a slow, steady and controlled manner — no squeezing!

The Physics Forceps® are effective in most cases, including badly decayed or broken down teeth, endodontically treated teeth, fractured or fragile teeth, curved or long rooted molars and cuspids, or any tooth that would historically be challenging with conventional instrumentation.
