How to manage swelling & pain post tooth extraction? - Dr. Chandan Mahesh

Removal of the tooth involves use of local anaesthesia, wherein the dentist will give a blood or a local anaesthesia or filtration to the area and he tries to remove the tooth. At the time of the removal the patient will be absolutely fine, but post removal the challenges are how he needs to take care. We tell the patient how to bite on the cotton that is given as a pack on the particular area and the patient is asked to bite that particular cotton for atleast half an hour. In a time span of atleast 2 to 3 hours there will be formation of a clot where the thrombin and the prothrombin factors in the blood will help in forming a clot. And the clot once it is formed, the bleeding will stop. As soon as the bleeding is stopped w e ask the patients not to take anything like gargle in the mouth or anything hot or anything spicy in the mouth. the only reason is if the clot in the mouth if it is disturbed, then it will lead to rebleeding and bleeding will be induced again , and the stopping of that will be very challenging. So we just tell the patient to place an ice pack over that or to have an icecream and the gelatine in the icecream makes the taste of the blood go off as well as the icepack over the particular extraction area when he rubs with the ice, the cold thing will give him a satisfied feeling for he will not like to disturb that area . We tell the patient to visit the dentist post one weeks time to see whether the bleeding is happening in a clean and neat way, failing that it will lead to a dry socket, wherein the patient will have severe pain or the particular infection happens through any smoking or drinking post extrication then the clot gets disturbed and the patient will be in severe pain and he visits the dentist an w e have to treat it with multiple antibiotics and painkillers have to be induced in the patient. Post operative acre is simple is to place a cotton pressure for half an a hour and remove it after half an hour and not disturbing he clot for 7 to 8 hour s of time and continuing his day to day habits the next day would be fine. In his case if suture is given then it would be much more easier. Wherein the food that can be restored in a day or two, and there are no much food restrictions if a suture is placed.

Post-Operative Instructions: Following Wisdom Tooth Removal | Oral Surgery Specialists of Oklahoma - https://oklahomacityoralsurgery.com

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop and grow in at the very back of the mouth. Many people do not have enough room for this final set of molars to grow into the dental arch, which can cause oral health problems, like dental crowding. Regular dental screening can assist in identifying wisdom tooth development early and monitoring growth during the early teen years. The best way to avoid wisdom tooth complications is to remove them before a problem arises. Early removal also tends to result in a much easier procedure and small surgical sites, which means a quicker and more comfortable recovery.

After earning his undergraduate degree in chemistry and pre-dental studies, Dr. Bryan went to dental school at Ohio State University. Dr. Bryan always enjoyed learning the science behind different treatments and procedures, so he completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma. He also teaches residents at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center and works at Mercy Health Center and Baptist Health Center.

Dr. Goodson received a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry at Brigham Young University before going to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, where he earned his Dental Degree. He enjoys working with his hands, and he wanted to be able to perform more advanced procedures, so he decided to focus on oral surgery. Dr. Goodson completed a four-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma before joining Dr. Bryan at Oral Surgery Specialists of Oklahoma.

Care after extraction can be broadly divided into the initial 24 hours, as well as after 24 hours, it can be broadly divided into these two categories. in the initial 24 hours, a s soon an the extraction is done, patient should hold on to cotton and bite onto it and he has to be continuously swallowing salvia, the main thing is you should not spit and you should be continually swallowing. Care should be taken that he should not bite onto his lip or cheek , which will be numb because of anesthesia. After an hours’ time if the throat permits, then he can have an ice-cream and take the medications that are given to the patient. After that he has to apply icepack for around 20 minutes per hour till he goes to bed and this has to be continued for initial 24 hours. Regarding food the patient can eat something soft and it should be room temperature and nothing hot and nothing spicy. The other most important thing is no smoking or no alcohol for the next 24 hours. After 24 hours routine hygiene measures can be started. patient can start rinsing his mouth after every meal. He can continue brushing even in case of the extraction region is sutured or the surgical region is sutured. There is no needed for any change in the day to day routine.

2 Views · 3 years ago

Have you ever had an upper broken root tip that took you 40 minutes or more to get out? Or did you have to refer this procedure out of your practice?

From the inventors of the Physics Forceps, introducing the next innovation in atraumatically extracting upper root tips. The GMX 69 is for atraumatically extracting upper root tips that are below the gumline. When you cannot access the tooth with the Physics Forceps, the GMX 69 can extract the root tip without laying a flap. By placing the buccal and lingual elevators between the gum and bone to the end of the root, you create space for the GMX 69 forcep to slowly leverage the broken tooth/root tip out.
