A wisdom tooth that erupts in a bad position can lead to pericoronitis. That is, an infection of the gums that surrounds the wisdom tooth, and whose symptoms include pain, inflammation, bleeding or bad breath. Wisdom tooth extraction solves this problem. But if the opposite tooth is not extracted, as it does not have contact with the lower one, it will gradually extrude, which may cause unwanted premature contact and again an inflammation of the lower gum. If the wisdom tooth is in a horizontal position, it can come into contact with the 2nd molar causing damage that can even end with the loss of both teeth. To remove a wisdom tooth that has not erupted, an incision is made and the overlying bone is released. Sometimes it´s necessary to divide the tooth in different parts, in order to properly remove it. Different materials such as Plasma Rich in Growth Factors can be placed in the alveolus, which accelerates healing.

Do you wish your third molars, or "wisdom teeth," never came in? Many of us do because they often cause problems and need to be removed. Fortunately, a fairly routine procedure, wisdom tooth extraction can be the answer for an impacted tooth, which fails to pass through the gums, or an erupted tooth, which does pass through the gums, but may still need to be removed. During this interactive procedure, you will begin by taking x-rays of the tooth in question, numbing the site, and then injecting the anesthetic. Then you will loosen the periodontal ligament and use a dental elevator to lift the tooth. Finally, you will use dental forceps to loosen and remove the tooth and leave your patient to recover. 00:08 Healing after tooth extraction:
After performing a dental extraction, the place on which the roots of the tooth are settled, called the alveolus, is exposed, forming a blood clot on it, thus generating the first stages of healing and protecting the nerve endings of the empty dental socket.

00:21 What does dry socket look like:
Occasionally, this clot may not form due to various factors, or it may disappear due to contamination by food debris or smoking during this healing phase. This produces a process called dry socket. When the nerve endings are exposed, intense pain is generated in the area, which usually appears during the first 3 days after a tooth extraction.

00:48 Dry socket treatment:
The main treatment is symptomatic with pain medication. It is also important to remove food debris by irrigating the area with saline solution. Curetting of the socket may be indicated to decontaminate the bone surface and cause bleeding for a new clot to form.

01:27 Treatment with Plasma Rich in Growth Factors:
Another effective treatment is the placement in the alveolus of plasma rich in growth factors, since it has bacteriostatic properties and favors tissue regeneration. It can also be used preventively, placing it at the time of extraction.

How is a dental implant surgery performed?

Immediate dental implants are fitted straight after extracting one or more teeth, although this does not mean that the dental implants and the teeth are fitted at the same time. When there is a problem with a tooth that means it has to be extracted, for example if the root is cracked, the dental implant can be planned to be fitted immediately after it is extracted without waiting for the wound to heal. This has the advantage of saving time.

We're back with another video! This is PART 2 to the wisdom tooth series where we actually removed my assistant, Quincy's wisdom tooth. Quincy's tooth was beginning to cause her some trouble and was partially erupted but was impacted against the bone. We decided that if we were going take it out, we should film it!

Prepare yourself, this video has a lot of blood but is an extremely cool surgery and I hope you like the video! Quincy was able to laugh through the whole appointment (not on ativan or nitrous) so just know that it looks worse than it is!
